News article

DTMI recently teamed up with the crew from Destination WA to share our top tips for preparing inexperienced drivers for the unique challenges of regional and remote driving ahead of a time when many of us are planning a Christmas road trip.

Daryl Burns from the Driving Access and Equity Program (DAEP) shared essential hands-on experiences for novice drivers, including:

  • Driving on long stretches, narrow roads, and gravel surfaces
  • Safe overtaking and sharing the road with large vehicles and wildlife

Daryl's top tips for a safe journey?

  • Take regular breaks to manage fatigue and concentration.
  • Minimise distractions and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.
  • Be cautious of wide loads and road trains on regional roads.
  • Overtake only on long, straight roads, signalling and maintaining speed.
  • Red P Plate drivers can have only one passenger, unless exempt.
  • Plan your journey considering remote roadhouses’ distances and operating hours.
  • Check the Main Roads WA Travel Map for fuel stops and road conditions before traveling.

Enjoy the episode and stay safe when exploring our beautiful state this festive season.
