Driver Education

Access to appropriate driving support remains a significant barrier for many learner drivers in regional and remote WA.

Driver Education initiatives build local capability by supporting people within DAEP engaged organisations to become more confident driving supervisors, mentors and licensed driving instructors. This helps create sustainable, locally delivered pathways to licensing in communities where access to formal driver training or supervised driving opportunities are limited.

Supervisor training

DAEP supervisor training is available to staff of organisations currently engaged with or receiving grant funding to deliver DAEP projects. It provides support to staff who wish to enhance their skills, knowledge and confidence in driving supervision.

The training combines theory and hands‑on driving activities to develop competent supervisors who understand road rules, safe driving techniques, and how to guide learners calmly and constructively. It forms the first stage of DAEP’s broader driver education pathway, helping participants become capable supervisors before progressing to further training and, if they choose, becoming licensed driving instructors.

Driving instructor training

This training is available to staff of organisations currently receiving grant funding to deliver DAEP projects and initiatives.

Training is offered across WA in carefully selected regional locations that offer a wide range of traffic environments to ensure access to realistic driving conditions and varied learning experiences.

Participants complete both the theory and practical components while engaging with diverse traffic scenarios. The program develops the skills and capabilities required to be effective supervisors and provides a pathway to becoming a licensed driving instructor, helping strengthen access to high-quality driving instruction throughout the state.

Refresher training

Refresher training provides ongoing support to community members who have completed DAEP Driving Instructor Training.

Rather than being a one-off course, refresher training helps participants maintain and strengthen their skills through follow up visits, practical guidance, and reinforcement of assessment standards. This supports instructors to stay up to date with best practice, prepare for required reassessments, and confidently continue delivering safe, high-quality instruction in their local areas.

Why it matters

People in regional and remote communities often face additional challenges when attempting to obtain a driver’s licence, including limited access to qualified supervisors and instructors.

DAEP driver education initiatives help address these barriers by building local capability, improving access to training, and supporting safer outcomes for novice drivers. Strong demand and positive feedback from participating organisations highlight the ongoing need for locally delivered education and support pathways.

What participants are saying

“I think this training should be mandatory for all driving instructors. The level of training has been a gold standard of training. To be able to pass on that standard to others.”

Erica

The training provided me an amazing opportunity to have one on one learning and support by highly qualified and experienced Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure assessors/compliance officers.

I feel really privileged to have been given this opportunity. Spending 10 days with other organisation course attendees provided a great networking opportunity. The networking and continued sharing of ideas with one another will be invaluable.”

Jacob

“I had a good experience. The compliance team was crucial to calming me and reassuring me. They were brilliant individually with the different skills they brough. The joy of meeting different people with different experiences.”
