Stay calm and keep driving

Kyle’s anxiety when behind the wheel was holding him back until Broome WA PCYC provided the right kind of driving instruction needed to build his driving skills and confidence.

Kyle first joined the PCYC driving program, funded by the Driving Access and Equity Program, in 2023. After getting his learner’s permit with PCYC’s support, Kyle took a short break before rejoining the program in February 2024 through a referral from a local employment service provider.

When Kyle returned, he faced high levels of stress and anxiety during driving lessons. Recognising this, the PCYC team tailored his experience to help him succeed.

Lessons were scheduled during quieter traffic times, and instructors used repetitive practice and positive reinforcement to reduce pressure. These adjustments gave Kyle the time and space he needed to build confidence gradually.

Over the next 12 months, Kyle’s progress was remarkable. His driving skills improved alongside his self-assurance, and he even expressed interest in further education.

The PCYC team partnered with Kyle’s employment service provider to support his enrolment in a computer literacy program, opening doors to future employment and learning opportunities.

When the time came for his practical driving assessment, Kyle approached it calmly and passed with minimal errors and shared some sage advice for others considering getting their licence.

“I can move from A to B faster without the need to rely on others. I can help mum out and get grocery shopping a lot easier,” he said.

“If you are going for your manual driver’s licence, don’t be scared, breathe and relax!”

Kyle’s final thoughts on the program?

“The best thing about this program is that it is free, the staff are with you every step of the way and the flexibility with times.”
