Austroads has added 14 countries to the Recognised Overseas Licences Scheme that were previously part of the former Experienced Driver Recognition (EDR) arrangements.
The scheme provides Australian jurisdictions with a nationally consistent process for assessing whether overseas driver’s licences can be recognised in Australia.
The 14 countries that have been added to the list of recognised countries are:
- Bulgaria
- Cyprus
- The Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Hungary
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Poland
- Romania
- Serbia
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- South Korea
- Taiwan
In WA, these arrangements will take effect on 31 October 2026.
Applications made before 31 October 2026 to transfer a driver’s licence from the 14 newly recognised countries to a WA licence will be assessed as a driver from a non-recognised country, by passing a theory test and practical driving assessment.
From 31 October 2026, holders of car and motorcycle licences from the 14 newly recognised countries can transfer to the corresponding WA driver’s licence class without completing these tests, as long as they meet all other licensing requirements.
