Rideshare in the mix

Trends and issues

On-demand transport services, such as taxis and rideshare options like Uber and DiDi, are becoming more popular. While rideshare trips still make up only a small share of total travel in Perth, growing use could create pressure on transport authorities to expand supporting infrastructure. This might include adding more taxi and rideshare ranks as well as creating safe, well-designed, pick-up and drop-off areas.

Among survey respondents who used rideshare, how frequently did they use it? 1

Available data shows that people in Perth mainly use rideshare services for work-related and social trips. Surveys from other Australian states suggest that convenience is a major reason people choose on demand transport, including rideshare.4 In New South Wales, for example, rideshare is used mostly for socialising and recreational travel.5 Together these insights show similarities and differences highlighting the importance of continuing to collect and analyse data in Perth to build a clearer, evidence-based understanding of how and why people are choosing rideshare services.

1 Sample size n=1,218. Respondents who used rideshare n=852.

2 The remaining 30% of respondents reported they did not use rideshare (n=366).

3 Sample size n=125 (i.e., 125 survey participants used rideshare on a weekly basis).
