A snapshot of how students are learning

Trends and issues

Changes in how often students and staff attend university or TAFE campuses can directly impact transport and infrastructure needs, including parking, drop-off zones, public transport services, bus interchanges and active travel networks.

A shift toward more remote or hybrid learning could reduce the demand for on-campus parking, easing pressure on limited space. Additionally, universities and TAFEs may benefit from understanding these trends to better plan class schedules and optimise the use of existing transport infrastructure.

Studying from home

Studying on campus

Hybrid study patterns disperse travel across the day and flatten traditional peak travel patterns. This creates demand for more flexible, all-day transport options, including safe active travel routes for local trips and regular public transport services that operate reliably throughout the day. 3

1 Sample size n=132. Survey respondents were able to select both studying from home and studying from campus on the same day. The number of survey participants studying at home was approx. n=75 on Monday, n=76 on Tuesday, n=73 on Wednesday, n=79 on Thursday and n=68 on Friday.

2 The number of survey participants who reported studying on campus was approx. n=79 on Thursday, n=76 on Tuesday, n=75 on Monday, n=74 on Wednesday and n=69 on Friday.
