Learn about Unlicensed Vehicle Permits (UVP) and how to apply.
Note: Each application is assessed individually and may be declined at the discretion of the DTMI Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Unlicensed vehicle permits (greater than 48 hours)
A UVP, also known as a special permit, is a third-party insurance policy issued when a temporary movement permit isn't appropriate.
A UVP may be issued at the discretion of DTMI's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for:
- a vehicle entered in a rally
- a rally support vehicle
- a motorcycle entered in an enduro event
- oversized vehicles or equipment used in the agricultural, industrial or mining industries that can’t be licensed as Class B vehicles
- vehicles overweight on axles and ineligible for Class C vehicle licensing
- vehicles that don’t meet the requirements for licensing
- vehicles designed primarily for recreational, sporting or related purposes.
A UVP is valid for a period of between 60 hours and 12 months depending on the intended use of the vehicle.
Conditions of use
The operator of a vehicle with a UVP must follow all conditions listed on the permit, as well as any conditions set by the issuing officer.
Vehicles with a UVP mustn’t carry a load on a road unless the goods belong to the vehicle owner and aren’t for sale or disposal. This includes items like boats on trailers and goods carried in caravans, display vehicles, etc.
Applying for a UVP
To apply for a UVP, you need to submit an application to the DTMI’s Vehicle Safety and Standards (VSS) at least 14 days before the permit is required.
