A job and a licence for Aliyah at age 17

At 17-years-old Aliah from Fitzroy Crossing became Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation’s (MWWAC) youngest qualified Community Development Program worker.

MWWAC were impressed with Aliah’s commitment, sharing that Aliah had proven she was reliable and hardworking.

They offered Aliah a part-time job as a general hand, working as part of a 12-woman team on various community projects.

MWWAC were able to assist Aliah further though their Drive Ahead Program, funded by the Driving Access and Equity Program since October, by supporting her to obtain her driver’s licence.

“My age held me back doing my hours until I worked with MWWAC and got their help,” Aliah said.

Aliah completed 14 hours of driving lessons with MWWAC, allowing her to hone her driving skills and build up her confidence. When the time came for Aliah to sit her practical driving assessment she passed on her first attempt.

Since gaining her licence, Aliah has received a number of heavy equipment certifications and is now a permanent staff member at MWWAC.

“Just keep going until you achieve your goal. Don’t let anyone bring you down,” Aliah said.
