Clifton is from Mount Magnet and has been working toward getting his driver’s licence for a few years, although he’s faced some challenges along the way.
The first being obtaining his birth certificate, which after years of setbacks, he achieved during the Aboriginal Justice Open Day in Mount Magnet in November 2023.
This crucial step opened the door for Clinton to pursue his driver’s licence. Just a few months later, at another Aboriginal Justice Open Day in Cue, Clifton passed the theory test for his learner’s permit.
From there, he enrolled in the Yulella Aboriginal Corporation’s driver training program funded by the Driver Access and Equity Program, where he received tailored driving lessons, mentoring, and encouragement.
Clifton’s journey was supported not only by the program team but also by his case manager, DTMI staff, and local community members who rallied behind him. Mechanics in town even cheered him on, showing how deeply the community was invested in his success!
On June 4, 2025 Clifton passed his hazard perception test, and just a week later, he achieved his ultimate goal and passed his practical driving assessment. An achievement that was celebrated by everyone who had supported him along the way.
Clifton’s story is a powerful reminder that progress is possible when persistence meets community support. With his licence in hand, Clifton now has the independence and opportunities he worked so hard for, and his community couldn’t be prouder.
