Burswood Jetty

The Burswood Jetty was an exciting project delivered by the Department of Transport (DoT) to provide safe access to the Optus Stadium precinct for those choosing to arrive by private or charter vessel.

The project has been completed and the jetty was opened by the Minister for Transport on 11 June 2018.

  Expression of Interest, Burswood Jetty

Closed 17 May 2018.

Through an expression of interest process DoT formalised arrangements with Sealink (Captain Cook Cruises) for an exclusive use licence for Berth 1 of Burswood Jetty. The licence addresses the potential for constrained access and/or delays by simultaneous operations; and increases public safety.

The remaining berths available at the jetty are available for use by other commercial operators and the public.

If you would like further information regarding the use of Berth 2 for commercial operations, please contact Herman de Mello, Harbour Manager on (08) 9431 1023 or herman.demello@transport.wa.gov.au

  Project overview

As part of the transport strategy to support the Perth Stadium, DoT was requested to construct a public jetty in the Swan River on the Burswood Peninsula. The $5 million funding for the project was provided by the Burswood Park Board.

The Burswood Jetty is located within the Swan Canning Riverpark, west of Optus Stadium and approximately 90 metres north of the Matagarup Bridge. The jetty consists of three floating pontoons - Berths 1, 2, and 3 - and are shown in the drawings and images below.

The jetty project was delivered in three parts.

The first works to establish the required land footprint for the passenger congregation area was completed by York Rizzani Joint Venture in May 2017.

A contract was awarded in November 2017 to experienced marine contractor Maritime Constructions to complete the design, construction and installation of the floating jetty running parallel to the shoreline and providing multiple pontoon berths. The pontoons were fabricated in WA and were towed to site up the Swan River. Works to connect the pontoons to the landside abutments were completed in May 2018.

Finally, work to landscape the area around the jetty was awarded to WA company Deep Green Construction, in September 2017, and is now complete.

Currently, there are no scheduled public ferry services planned for the jetty. However, it has been designed to accommodate future public ferry use if required.

How to use the Burswood Jetty

Introduction

The jetty has been designed for public and commercial use and some special conditions for use will enable the jetty to function effectively on event, and non-event days at Optus Stadium. There is one exclusive use berth under a licence, and two short-term berths that will be available to recreational and commercial craft on demand.

Berth 1 is for exclusive priority use by Captain Cook Cruises

DoT has granted a licence for exclusive use of Berth 1 to Captain Cook Cruises, to enable transportation of large groups of people via the river to Optus Stadium on event days.

There will be no berthing of other vessels on Berth 1 other than Captain Cook Cruises.

Berth 2 is for charter operators on event days, and the public at other times

Charter and commercial vessels can berth on Berth 2. In the event that public vessels are using Berth 2, they must immediately vacate the berth for approaching ferries.

They will also have to adhere to the following conditions of use of the jetty:

  • Skipper must remain with the vessel at all times.
  • Users are limited to 15 minute berthing times at the jetty, for pick up and drop off of passengers only.
  • No swimming, diving or fishing from the jetty.

Berth 3 is for public use

Public vessels can berth on Berth 3 at any time. They will have to adhere to the following conditions of use of the jetty:

  • Skipper must remain with the vessel at all times.
  • Users are limited to 15 minute berthing times at the jetty, for pick up and drop off of passengers only.
