Regional aviation funding helps keep WA communities connected

In regional Western Australia, air services aren’t just about getting from A to B - they help people stay connected to healthcare, work, family and essential services. Many of these routes are supported by the State Government through the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI).

The 2026–27 State Budget includes more than $5 million to support three key regional air routes. This includes the Inter-Regional Flight Network, operated by Nexus, which connects Geraldton, Karratha, Port Hedland and Broome. It also supports Aviair services on the Kununurra–Halls Creek–Balgo and Derby–Broome routes.

These routes are part of a broader network of nine fully regulated services that help ensure regional communities have reliable, ongoing access to air travel - supporting local economies, reducing isolation and helping towns grow.

DTMI works closely with airlines and regional communities to make sure services meet community needs. This includes minimum service levels, capped fares, and required reporting on demand and performance for fully regulated routes.
