2026 marks 20 years since the introduction of the Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST) in WA.

The requirement for an RST was first announced by the State Government in 2006 as a compulsory marine qualification to ensure that individuals in charge of recreational vessels in WA have a minimum standard of skill and knowledge to operate safely.

When launched 20 years ago, the RST was recognised as the most significant marine safety measure implemented in WA. Today it continues to be an essential requirement to go boating and is a key educational tool in reducing the number of boating incidents and fatalities in WA.

DTMI administers the RST which is delivered using more than 100 authorised assessors throughout WA.

The RST is required for anyone operating a boat with a motor over 6 horsepower (4.5kW) and skippers are required to carry their RST while boating.

Find out more about RST's and try some of the test quizzes on the Recreational Skipper's Ticket page.
