Safety labels now required for electric and hybrid vehicles in WA

Western Australia has introduced new laws as an important safety measure to protect emergency services personnel responding to vehicle incidents.

New laws that require WA owners of electric and hybrid vehicles to affix blue triangle EV labels to their licence plates began on 1 January 2026.

Hydrogen vehicle owners are also now required to affix yellow pentagon H labels to their licence plates.

The EV and H labels enable first responders to quickly identify electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles at an incident site and take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

The new laws apply to vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 2019, however, all electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicle owners are encouraged to add the labels to their licence plates.

The labels retail for around $10 a pair and can purchased at automotive shops around WA or ordered online. They are not available from DTMI service centres.

Owners have been given a transition period until 1 January 2027 to affix the labels, with non-compliant vehicle owners risking fines of up to $800 after that date.
