Capturing our coastline

WA has the longest coastline of any state or territory in Australia, extending more than 20,000 kilometres.

Via DoT’s extensive network of coastal cameras, tide gauges and wave buoys capable of recording both wave height and direction, current coastal conditions are accessible 24/7 helping keep commercial and recreational mariners safe at the same time as providing a highly valued source of information for board riders seeking to catch their daily wave.

The network also provides essential data for the sustainable management of our expansive coastline with the ability to closely track coastal changes and pinpoint work to address erosion and other issues.

Significant ongoing investment in traditional and new digital coastal mapping techniques provides further up-to-date data that is applied to our growing suite of nautical charts and is available for developers and planners as they imagine the future of the State’s biggest asset.

DoT’s vault of bathymetric data including specialised hydrographic surveys and LiDAR mapping is now available using a self-serve application providing users with the tools to browse and then download information instantaneously.

The effort made to map and monitor our coastline tells us what’s happening above and below the water line and delivers many benefits for the broader WA community.
