Safety duties policies
The Transport (Road Passenger Services) Act 2018 specifies a range of safety duties and standards for passenger transport services.
The Act defines the roles of those involved in the industry and sets out their obligations and responsibilities, particularly in relation to the health and safety of passengers, drivers and the public.
At the core of the legislation is a chain of accountability, which is based on the concept of a duty of care and defines various levels of duties depending on the industry roles.
Where legislation imposes requirements on industry, the role of the Department of Transport is to provide support to industry participants to understand and comply with their responsibilities.
