Onslow Community Boating Precinct

The Department of Transport (DoT) is working with the Shire of Ashburton to deliver the Onslow Community Boating Precinct.

Located at the Onslow Beadon Creek Maritime Facility, the Community Boating Precinct (CBP) will deliver modern recreational boating facilities, providing economic and community benefits to Onslow and the wider Pilbara region.

The project is being delivered in 2 stages.

Stage 1 includes dredging of a new basin, construction of a new two-lane boat ramp with central floating jetty, sealed car park and drainage, solar lighting, minor landscaping, and public amenities.

Stage 2, if funded in the future, will include construction of fully serviced boat pens, public jetties and berthing, additional services, further landscaping, extended car parking and serviced development lots.

  Project background

The Onslow CBP was proposed in 2014, as part of planning for the Beadon Creek (Onslow) Maritime Facility.

In 2016, DoT partnered with the Shire of Ashburton, other key government agencies and the local community to develop a concept plan and business case for the Onslow Community Boating Precinct.

DoT entered into an agreement with the Shire of Ashburton to deliver the first stage of the project.

Stage 1 of the project is funded by the:

  • Shire of Ashburton ($6.4 million),
  • Chevron Operated Wheatstone Project ($1.5 million),
  • Commonwealth Recreational Fishing and Camping Facilities Program ($0.9 million), and
  • Western Australian Government ($5.2 million).

  Project status

Stage 1 of the project is now complete. Stage 1 of the project was delivered in three phases:

  • Stage 1A saw most works completed to deliver the new dredged basin and rock revetments, two-lane boat ramp with central floating jetty, new sealed car park, drainage and lighting, and was opened to the public on 30 July 2022.
  • Stage 1B saw the old boat ramp removed and the rock revetments extended and a small beach area established with works completed in September 2022.
  • Stage 1C, the final works as part of Stage 1, was completed in August 2023, with the area further enhanced through asphalting of the car park, line marking, kerbed traffic islands, landscaping, installation of new toilets and reinstatement of the fish cleaning station.

Detailed design for a future Stage 2, which will include fully serviced boat pens, public jetties and further landside development is also underway, however this stage is not currently funded.

Land use framework for Beadon Creek maritime facility

The Department of Transport has prepared a Land Use Framework (LUF) for Beadon Creek Boat Maritime Facility which can be used by decision makers to consider future development applications within the Facility.

The LUF responds to the Visions, principles and goals of both the Shire of Ashburton and the Department of Transport, providing both social and economic opportunities for Onslow, including multiple marine industrial sites and a community boating precinct, containing a boat launching facility and an area suitable for the development of a marina.
