  Minor inspection policy

A formal 'minor inspection' policy applies to vehicles considered to be in low risk categories in regards to roadworthiness.

Criteria

The minor inspection policy applies to light vehicles (less than 4,500 kg gross vehicle mass) in the following categories:

  • Motor cars.
  • Motorcycles and scooters derivatives.
  • Light commercial vehicles (utilities and tray tops etc.), caravans and trailers.

These vehicles must also:

  • Be less than 3 years old (based on the compliance date).
  • Have travelled less than 60,000 km (where an odometer is fitted).
  • Not be recorded on the Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR).

The minor inspection policy also applies to any licensed vehicle requiring identity verification or reassessment only, irrespective of the age of the vehicle. This policy does not apply to:

  • Factory new vehicles.
  • Public passenger carrying vehicles (buses, taxis etc, whether used for hire and reward or not) or any other vehicle that is subject to annual inspection.
  • Boat trailers.
  • Heavy vehicles.
  • Dangerous goods vehicles.
  • Vehicles recorded on the Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR).
  • Vehicles subject to a compliance notice (often referred to as a yellow sticker, work order or defect notice).

These vehicles will continue to be fully inspected. Given the detail outlined in this policy, an examiner may elect to fully inspect any vehicle if they have reason to believe the vehicle is unsafe or that other issues warrant closer scrutiny of the vehicle and its equipment.

  Reporting a crash

Timely reporting of hazards from the community is vital to maintaining our road network and associated infrastructure.

The driver of a vehicle and/or rider of a bicycle must report a traffic crash when the incident occurred on a road or any place commonly used by the public, e.g. car parks and the:

  • Incident resulted in bodily harm to any person.
  • Total value of property damaged to all involved parties exceeds $3,000.
  • Owner or representative of any damaged property is not present.

Reporting a hazard

For traffic lights and hazards on roads please inform Main Roads WA using their online form or calling 138 138.

You may also find it helpful to use a street map or a Internet map to identify the street name and location of the hazard.
