Animals mustn’t be in a position that obstructs the driver’s vision or causes distraction. Drivers aren’t permitted to have an animal on their lap while operating a vehicle.
It’s recommended that animals be properly restrained during transport to reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident.
Pets must be appropriately tethered or caged when transported on the back of a utility (ute) or trailer.
Pets carried on motorcycles (dogs etc.)
Motorcycle riders mustn’t carry animals between themselves and the handlebars or in any position that interferes with control of the motorcycle or visibility of the road.
Note: Animals may be carried for farming purposes, but only for distances up to 500 metres on a road, and only when it is safe to do so.
Animals tethered to vehicles
A rider or driver mustn’t operate a vehicle (including a bicycle) while an animal is tethered to it and moving alongside or behind the vehicle.
Dogs in cars
Leaving a dog in a car on a hot day can result in prosecution, fines, imprisonment, and a lengthy prohibition order preventing the person from owning animals for a period determined by the court.
