The Marine Education Boatshed offers a range of marine safety courses designed for primary and secondary schools and vocational training.
Canoeing and snorkelling
Canoeing and snorkelling are great ways to introduce marine safety to students.
We can provide up to 14 canoes and 24 sets of snorkelling equipment for schools to use for:
- Introductory marine training
- Marine science studies
- Basic snorkelling instruction.
Junior Crew program
The Junior Crew program is for primary school students and focuses on:
- Safe use of boats
- Safety of others when boating.
The program provides a range of free resources, including lesson plans, worksheets, logbook, and certificates of completion.

Seatrek program
The Seatrek program gives students the opportunity to gain valuable marine safety knowledge while undertaking a sailing expedition along the Western Australian coastline.
Sailing expeditions range from day trips on the Swan River to 5-day expeditions to Shark Bay.
During the program, students will learn skills in:
- Advanced boat handling
- Coastal navigation
- Radio procedure
- Sailing.
The Seatrek programs focuses on teaching voyage planning, preparation and personal safety.
Note: All students must have a Recreational Skipper's Ticket to participate in the Seatrek program.
The Seatrek program qualifies as part of the outdoor education course in the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)

Sailor Raymond: Right guys we’ve got the gear that we need to take on board our yacht. We’ve got our jib here, our main sail, a bailing bucket, two oars, our rudder and finally an anchor.]

Sailor 2: And now we have everything loaded onto our boat. The first thing that we need to do before we raise our sails is to make sure our boat is facing the wind. If you don’t face the wind the sails will not go up properly.

Sailor 2: The next thing to do is check all of our halyards are not twisted.

Sailor 2: because if they are twisted your sails will not go up.

Sailor 2: We unclip the main sail halyard from the main, from the clip halyard here point. And please never, ever let this go because otherwise it zips up the mast and we have to drop the mast and lose about 20 minutes of mucking around.

Sailor 2: If you do have to unclip it, like I have just done now, and you have to leave it, make sure you clip it on to something and you can come back and get it later.

Sailor 2: Now our mainsail will be our first sail raised.

Sailor 2: This is our mainsail. It’s been put on to the vessel with the fat end up the front. We now need to unroll it a fair bit. Helped by Raymond, my abled assistant.

Sailor 2: we’ll get a fair bit of it unrolled. And now what we need to do is to take our halyard – check that it’s not twisted once again – pull the little hand-grenade clip.
Sailor 2: We’re going to attach it to the head of the sail. This is the head here.

Sailor 2: When you attach it, please make sure the little hand grenade clip is in properly. You do this by testing it.

Sailor 2: Because if that comes apart it will cause us an issue.

Sailor 2: I’ve asked Raymond to come to the front and he’s going to be hauling the sail up with his halyard. He’s going to be feeding it through, underneath the horn cleat and pulling at the same time.

Sailor 2: The bolt rope, which is the rope on the front of the sail needs to be fed into the slot in the mast.

Sailor 2: We feed the head of the sail and the bolt rope into the track and please pull on the rope there thank you Raymond.

Sailor 2: You’ll see that I’m down here feeding the bolt rope very low into the track, just guiding it in with my hand and my thumbs from down low. Just keep going. There we go. Oop. There we go.
[Text on screen: continue pulling the halyard (through the horn cleat) to raise the sail.
Sailor 2: Now if the sail does get stuck and you can’t pull it up - this happens from time to time. Please try that, Ray. Pull. And it’s stuck. And it comes out. So, you need to pull down and continue the feed. Go Raymond. Off we go.

Sailor 2: When we get 15 centimetres approximately from the goose neck - and this is our goose neck - we need to take our boom, we need to twist is sideways onto the goose neck into the little hole.
[Text on screen: Turn the boom pole on its side and feed the end onto the goose neck.]
Sailor 2: Push it on and have it vertically and finish off the feed.

Sailor 2: Finally, to finish off here we’re going to pull on the halyard, we’re going to ‘oxo’ it off around the horn cleat. We’re going to make sure our ropes are nice and tidy. We’d like our boat to be ship-shape.

Sailor 2: We’re going to feed the loose rope between the halyard and the mast back to the front just to make sure we can pull it out the same way as we put it in.

Sailor 2: we now need to attach our main sheet device

Sailor 2: and this gets attached to the little clip on the end of the boom here. The biggest danger now is this boom.
[Visual: Sailor 2 taps the boom.]
Sailor 2: It will hit you in the head so keep down low. Sit right down in the floor of the boat if you have to stay away from it. Please what ever you do don’t hang onto the sail otherwise you will start sailing and we just really want this sail to flap at the moment.
The next thing that we need to do set our jib up at the head sail. Now this is the head of the sail. It’s the pointy part of the sail.

Sailor 2: This will be going up the mast. If you run your hand down the wire, you will find the foot of the sail, which you attach to the front of the boat.
[Visual: Sailor 2 attaches the jib to the front of the boat.]
Sailor 2: let’s attach the foot to the front of the boat now. And now let’s attach the halyard to the pointy top of the sail.
Can I have the halyard off the port stay please Raymond?
[Visual: Sailor Raymond passes the halyard.]

Sailor 2: Thank you Ray. You’ll notice he passed it to me and didn’t let it go because that will go up the mast as well. We’re going to clip on our hand-grenade clip there and make sure it doesn’t come off.

Sailor 2: The last corner on the triangle has the sheet ropes attached to it. I’m going to take the green rope and I’m going to take it outside of the stay, on the starboard side.
[Text on screen: Jib sheet travels OUTSIDE the side stay and in to the cleat.]
Sailor 2: I’m going to pass it through the black fair lead, through the jam cleat and finish it off with a nice figure eight stopper knot. Like so.

Sailor 2: and let it dangle. Ray has done exactly the same on the port side of the boat. Now Ray is going to pull up his jib with his halyard.

Sailor 2: I’m going to ask Ray to hang on to that halyard. Not necessarily tie it off at this point. Now Ray is currently hanging on to the halyard, and he’s pulled it through the hole in the horn cleat. He’s keeping the tension on the halyard, and his job is going to be to tighten it up as far as he can. But what we need to do at the moment we’ve got a very, very loose jib and we need to do is tighten it up. We do this by grasping hold of this forestay, pull our weight on to it, which bends the mast forward.

Sailor 2: and Ray is now going to tighten that up as best he can.

Sailor 2: The aim of this is to have a really slack wire here and a tight wire here. So slack here. Tight here.

Sailor 2: This will give us our best sailing speed. Once again, we need to make our boat nice and tidy – or ship shape as we like to call it – with our halyard from the back to the front so that we always know when we remove these ropes they go to the back of the vessel.

Sailor Raymond: Now we’re going to put a rudder on now. We’ve got gudgeons here that fit onto two pintles down the back. Need to take this fairly slowly and carefully.

Sailor Raymond: We then have a snail clip here. That goes into the hole at the very top of the pintle like that.

Sailor Raymond: and stops the rudder from coming off.
Sailor 2: The centre board needs to be lowered once you’ve either left the beach or you’ve raised your anchor. Do not lower the centre board when there are anchor lines in the water.

Sailor 2: It’s a simple matter of pulling and lifting on the cord and the centre board has now been dropped.

Sea trek educator: Good morning. Welcome to the minimal impact video for Shark Bay. We are going to go through a whole lot of things now that we expect to be done so that we minimise our impact on the environment up here in Shark Bay.
First, you’ll notice that I have a nice shady hat on, not just a peaked cap.
[Text on screen: Personal gear.]
Sea trek educator: I’ve got a long-sleeved shirt to prevent getting sunburnt and to protect myself from sandflies if there are any there.
[Text on screen: Hat, long sleeves and pants and especially shoes!]
Sea trek educator: I have shoes on my feet that I can wear in the water and out of the water. It’s most important to have these are there are cone shells and various other things in the water. [Text on screen: Sunscreen and insect repellent.]
Sunscreen. We supply sunscreen and also you supply your own.
We have the Bushman insect repellent and also um Aeroguard as well.
[Visual: Speaker show a pump-pack of sunscreen, a tube of Bushman insect repellent and spray Aeroguard.]
Sea trek educator: So, we need to protect ourselves, look after ourselves to make our journey pleasant and enjoyable.
Ok, so this is a demonstration of how we have gear set up here.
You will notice we have a slops pit here. It will be further away from the water that we have here at the moment. This is where we put any of our slops in. Only small stuff.

Sea trek educator: I’ve got my Trangia cooker here which is off the tarpaulin.
A tarpaulin that I will be sitting on to cook with. And we’ve got a strainer as well that we can strain any of the small fine rubbish before it goes into our slops pit.
I’ve got my bowl, fork, um, detergent, matches, a scourer, tea towel, food, um a bag, a zip lock bag to put any rubbish in, or any bits from the slops pit, and my water.
Ok, let’s just break that down. These are the things that the Boatshed will supply.
[Text on screen: Boatshed supplies – shovel, bucket, sieve, water, tarp and washing detergent.]
[Sea trek educator: picks up items as he mentions them]
Sea trek educator: We have/supply a shovel, a washup bowl, a straining device, wilderness detergent, water, and of course the tarpaulin that I’m sitting on.
We will tell you where you are to set up your camp, and to set up your cooking area and not going off onto individual places.
[Text on screen: You supply – cooker, matches, sponges, eating gear, tea towel and zip lock bags.]
Sea trek educator: Things that you need to supply will be your cooking arrangement; however you’re cooking, you will need a sponge, matches, any utensils and a bowl, food, a tea towel and a zip lock bag. You will need to be well prepared because we’ll be out in the wilderness.
Ok, when we start cooking, you’ll notice I have my Trangia set up on the sand. I’ve got all my other bits and pieces all together, so they don’t get lost. Um, I have my bowl for cooking and my food and everything else set up.
We will all be doing this altogether. Not at individual places or by your individual tent.
Ok, let us start cooking. I’m going to put my food into my bowl and place that onto my Trangia and of course the lid that came off here goes into there.

Sea trek educator: That is squashed down as flat we can possibly get it, maybe even use a device to get that nice and flat and that goes into our zip lock bag.
[Text on screen: squeeze down your rubbish as much as possible.]

Sea trek educator: We don’t leave any rubbish around at any stage.
[Text on screen: Have a few different sizes of zip lock bags.]
Sea trek educator: That’s there so it doesn’t blow away. And I’ve got all my gear here together as well. And I’m about to start cooking.

Sea trek educator: Ok, my food’s been cooking away here. You have a choice to make of course whether you eat it out of the bowl you cooked it in, or whether you have your own bowl. That’s pretty cute that one.

That you, ah, put your food in that you enjoy, or eating it out of there.

Sea trek educator: A little more washing up, but that’s a choice that you have to make.
Ok, we’ve finished our cooking, and what we do need to make sure of is that we don’t get the soot on the bottom of our bowl all over our hands and be careful where we put the bowl down.
[Text on screen: Don’t touch the bottom of the cooking bowl.]
Sea trek educator: Do not put it on the tarpaulin, because it will melt it as well. And of course we’re ready to put this out.
[Visual: Sea trek educator indicates the Trangia.]
Sea trek educator: And make sure you don’t use the one, the lid, that’s got the ‘O’ ring in. This is the one that we can vary the heat. So just put that on, don’t throw it on. Just place it on the top like that, very easily. You don’t get burnt.
There’s nothing like good food at the end of the day. Or at any time really.
[Text on screen: Use the tarp so sand does not get in your food!]
Sea trek educator: So, we are ready to eat and um go through the eating process and then we’re going talk to you about the clean-up. So, bon appetite!

Sea trek educator: Boy am I full now. I can’t eat any more. I have a little bit left in here and a little bit of scrap in my bowl. We try to eat everything we can.
[Text on screen: Eat everything or find someone who is still hungry.]
Sea trek educator: So now I’m going to put any of the scraps, I’m going to put them into this bag. So, scrape my bowl out get everything out that I possibly can and everything out of my Trangia bowl, so I that I’ve got very, very little left in there at all.

Sea trek educator: So, now that the bowls are relatively clean, and I can begin our washing up process.
Ok, to stop ourselves getting sick we need to make sure we clean everything in hot, soapy water. We certainly don’t want people from getting ill from not cleaning their bowls and their equipment properly.
[Text on screen: Hot soapy water is a MUST!]
Sea trek educator: I’m going to put some water into here, and I’m going to heat it up on my Trangia stove, so that I’ve got warm water to wash everything in.

Sea trek educator: Ok, now I’ve put my water on for cleaning up and washing up. Everybody should do this at the same time so that we’ve got enough water to put into our, our bucket here to do the washing.

Sea trek educator: And, I’ve got the water on the boil. And I’ll put that there just to let you know that is hot and shouldn’t be touched.

Sea trek educator: And while we are waiting for that to boil. A couple of other good ideas. We’ve got these disinfecting wipes, and we can take out of here.

[Text on screen: Alcohol wash is preferred as it creates less rubbish to take home.]
Sea trek educator: Great for cleaning your hands and your face and disinfecting them at the same time. And we also have a no-rinse body wash, which is very helpful as well.
Ok, our water is heated up now. I’m going to add a bit of our wash that we’re going to use; we don’t need much of this, into our washing up tub.
[Incidental background noise: overhead plane.]
Sea trek educator: And then take my water off and pour my hot water into my washing up bucket. And I can mix it up with my fork to make it nice and soapy, and of course, if everybody does the same thing, we’re going to have plenty of water in there to do our washing up.
Ok, I’ve poured my water into the washing up bucket. You’ll notice the bottom of the Trangia is very, very black. And to clean that, if I take that down to the water’s edge, down to the wet sand

[Text on screen: Don’t rinse the inside of the pot into the water!]
Sea trek educator: and I can rub that up and down in the wet sand and that’s started to clean the bottom up and that’s a very, very effective way of cleaning it all up, and getting the soot off the bottom.

Sea trek educator: Ok, so now we’ve got our washing up water in there and it’s a good idea to start with your bowl, your fork, your cup, and things like that, that aren’t major items to clean generally. And to leave the Trangia bowls and things until last.
I’ll have somebody ready with ah, I’ve got my scourer and somebody ready with a tea towel to help. It’s great to work together with somebody else to do this. So, I start my washing process.
Ok, so I’ve cleaned up all my cooking gear and it’s all here ready to put away and this just leaves now the water that was used to wash everybody’s gear. This needs to be put through the sieve and into our slops pit.

Sea trek educator: So, working together we pour all the gear into there and all into the slops pit. Any little bits of left over I can grab out of there and put into the bag. So, I can put that neatly into here.
Just a reminder that this slops pit will not be right next to our cooking area and it will be quite away, away from the water.
At the end of course, we need to fill our, fill the slops pit hole in.

And of course, another thing while we’re at holes and things that we need to be having a community toilet. That will be dug 150 meters away. You’ll need to take your own handwash and toilet paper for that purpose.

Sea trek educator: And of course, after you’ve been to the toilet the shovel will be there and you can cover over what you’ve done so it’s ok for the next person.
Ok, so I hope you’ve taken notice of this demonstration, because this is what is expected on every sea trek. And we want, it makes it very easy if everybody adheres to what we’ve gone through today. Thank you.

Each expedition can take up to 24 students and 2 staff members in our fleet of boats, which includes:
- 6 5-metre self-contained sailboats.
- Motorised safety and support vessel.
Survival swimming program
Our survival swimming program teaches people to swim in marine and coastal environments.
The program is designed to complement existing programs conducted in swimming pools and includes:
- Use of lifejackets
- Entry and exit practicals
- Survival techniques
- Real-life simulations.
Vocational education and training
The Marine Education Boatshed is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 51772), and provides nationally-recognised vocational training in marine safety.
We currently award Statements of Attainment for the following units of competency:
- MEM50008 Carry out trip preparation and planning
- MEM50009 Safely operate a mechanically powered recreational boat
- MEM50010 Respond to boating emergencies
- SISOSAI001 - Sail small boats in smooth water and light to moderate winds
Statements of Attainment recognise a student's abilities in particular units of competency. While they are not full qualifications in themselves, they allow students to get recognition for vocational qualifications and skill sets in future.
Skipper's ticket training for schools
The Recreational Skipper's Ticket (RST) is the qualification needed to skipper a power boat with a motor greater than 6hp in WA.
The School Curriculum and Standards Authority has endorsed the RST course for credit in the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).
By obtaining an RST, students will earn 1 unit of equivalence towards their WACE.
The Marine Education Boatshed can help teachers and principals organise for RST training to be conducted in their schools by authorised providers.
Students in years 10, 11 or 12 can also earn the RST in their own time but must get it validated by their school before the WACE points can be transferred.
